Every Friday here at Girls on Food, we bring you Weekly Wanderlust, featuring the best our in cities, recipes, videos and advanced notice on events we’ll be appearing at.

TinTin here:

Thrillist’s 5th annual Taco Knockout is Saturday, August 12th, 1 PM – 4 PM at Lot 613, 613 Imperial Street, Los Angeles, CA.

This event is going to be packed with the most popular tacos SoCal has to offer, including Aqui Es Texcoco, Lola’s Mexican Cuisine, La Carmencita Restaurant and many more. There will also be chilled cervezas from Estrella Jalisco and a live DJ set from Electric Taco.

South Bay favorite The Standing Room will be serving an original creation, Tako Poke Tacos, which we’re the most excited for. We predict this taco—a blue corn tortilla topped with smoked octopus, tobiko, ikura and chives—will be the most innovative bite there.

General admission per person is $35, but if you use the discount code THRILLISTVIP at check out, you get $5 off. Just a little gift from Girls on Food. #yourewelcome

Traditionally this event takes place in NYC but it’s about time Thrillist brought it to LA! Not trying to start a Tupac vs Biggie feud here, but SoCal really is the home of the best Mexican street food in the U.S.

For out-of-towners, I will be live on our Instagram stories feed providing you with footage of the event. But if you’re in LA and at the event, be sure to say hi!

The Bar Café in Uxbridge, Ontario

One of my favourite things about living just outside of the city limits is all of the wonderful little restaurants and cafés I get to indulge in every so often. One of the most important things I think we all try to achieve is eating healthy and reducing our ecological footprint. Not easy to do in today’s busy world with fast food so readily available at our little finger tips. It’s refreshing to find a spot that is organic, fresh and locally sourced. And did I mention food that is ridiculously full of delicious flavour?

The Bar Café
2 Brock Street West, Uxbridge, ON Canada

When I walked into The Bar Café, the owner and foodie extraordinaire, Trisha Bush, was helping and greeting her customers with a warm smile. Trish and I go way back as I am her hair stylist and she is my vegetarian food guru. She told me she would be right with me and to go have a seat in the back by the Mandala. Nothing gets you more visually into the zone of peace and tranquility like a beautiful Mandala.

The Bar Café serves all types of foods and the Mediterranean influence is strong. Not only are there plenty of protein options, they can accommodate various types of diets including gluten free, vegetarian, vegan and raw.

Love and Food Trucks at Pride Toronto

When I think of Pride Toronto, I think of love, acceptance, and freedom. There is so much love and unity in the air that it is mesmerizing and intoxicating. One little-known gem about Pride is the abundance of gourmet food trucks and stations dishing out mouth watering meals. They are serving up everything from baked goods to fish tacos to every kind of poutine you can imagine! I obviously had to grab my friends, make my way down the line and try a little bit of everything!after reading this article to make your food truckh usiness run more smoothly.

Hambrgr in Hamilton, Ontario

I’m no burger connoisseur, but this joint is hands down the BEST burger in Hamilton. Ever since they made King William their home, they have been masterfully cleansing our palates of all the sh*tty burgers that came before them.

49 King William Street, Hamilton, ON L8R 1A2, Canada

12910614_10153550337995922_1577760913_nHambrgrs’ motto is plain and simple they make a good f*cking burger, the goal is to focus on what a good burger entails and deliver the best experience for their customers. Making a downright delicious burger isn’t rocket science, although I believe Hambrgr has nailed the formula. A burger from here will cure the hangry (when someone is hungry and angry because they are hungry), the hungover or someone who simply is in need of some satisfaction.

The locals will be glad to know that Hambrgr uses ONLY locally sourced ingredients delivered daily to their location, obviously to ensure that their burgers are at their full personality and flavor. Every burger patty is made with fresh AAA chuck and is made right on location.

Montezuma’s Revenge

During my first visit to Hambrgr, I was able to enjoy the Montezuma’s Revenge. This burger features house pickled jalapenos, smoked cheddar, crispy onions, Sambal mayo, and iceberg lettuce. If you have the appetite of an ancient warrior, this burger will not disappoint and delivers on all levels of taste. For those of you who like a little kick to their burger definitely, try Montezuma’s Revenge when you come to Hambrgr.

Have You Ever Heard of a Patty Melt?
Have You Ever Heard of a Patty Melt?

I was also able to sample the Have You Ever Heard of a Patty Melt? courtesy of my boyfriend. This burger features caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, Russian Porter dressing, butter toasted rye bread that is certainly a classic melt. Is nothing better than a burger on a healthier bread option right? It makes you feel a little better about devouring until you can barely eat another bite, but who are we kidding? You won’t have eater’s regret after eating a burger like this one.

Of course, no meal would be complete without a fabulous side to go with it. We decided to try out the “half & half”, which was half hand cut potatoes and half sweet potatoes fries which can only be considered as the best of both worlds. The fries were served with Sambal mayo which was a perfect companion to these delicious fries.

Not only was the food great, but they also have a great atmosphere. The restaurant is small, and seating arrangements can be cozy, but it is a great spot to hit up with a couple of friends. It seems that small places are the way to go nowadays; they are cozy, intimate and add a feeling of closeness to other people who are there for the same reason you are: Good times, great food and drinks.

Hambrgr just proves that you don’t have to go much further than your own backyard to get a great homemade burger, okay so maybe it’s further than your backyard how can you say no to meat that literally melts in your mouth. Thank you Hambrgr for a mouth watering experience. Next time I’ll be back hungrier than the last time I was there.

Hallelujah!: Sweet Jesus Ice Cream in Toronto

Forgive me, Lord for I have sinned, I lost my Sweet Jesus virginity and I must say it was quite satisfying, Sweet Jesus isn’t just your typical ice cream parlour in Toronto, it’s a place where people go to give their taste buds their own happy ending and indulge their sweet tooth. I recently had the pleasure of losing my Sweet Jesus virginity to the John Street location and unlike many first I have had in my life this was one first I did not regret!

Krusty the Cone

My friends and I traveled far and wide, we even stood in line for 45 minutes just to feel the cooling sensation that this soft-serve brings to your lips and mouth and it was well worth the wait. You know something is going to be well worth it when you have to go to extreme lengths to get it.

When we finally got to the front I was still unsure of what I wanted, it was a tie between Birthday Cake and S’mores Campfire. Tough choice I was faced with, but choosing a flavour combo of ice cream is actually a hard decision people! This was my first time here, I didn’t just want to get anything I wanted something remarkable so clearly I ended up picking the Birthday Cake because of course I wanted the awesome candle that came with it. Side note my friend actually blew it out for me because fires make her nervous, she owes me!

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies and Creme, Krusty the Cone, Red Rapture and Sweet Baby Jesus

When going to new places like these with friends we always like to taste test what our friends get as well so I ended up trying the Bangin’ Brownie and the Lemon Coconut Cream Pie.

Bangin’ Brownie consists of chocolate soft serve, caramel, chocolate sauce, brownie bits and chocolate cookie crumble. I had the opportunity to try some of my friend’s Bangin Brownie and it was like i just won the golden ticket into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. If you’re looking for something that will satisfy that sweet tooth Bangin’ Brownie is for you.

Birthday Cake

Birthday Cake consists of vanilla soft serve, vanilla icing, birthday cake bits and my favourite sprinkles! Also, to top that all off you get a sweet birthday candle to blow out! How fun? I would recommend this sweet concoction for anyone who is looking to have something simple and not overly sweet. This satisfied my ice cream craving without making me feel sick and it was so yummy!

Sweet Baby Jesus

Lemon Coconut Cream Pie consists of vanilla soft serve, lemon curd, toasted coconut crumble and graham cracker bits. I also taste tested this lovely concoction from a friend and it was different than any other ice cream pairings I have tried before, but a good different. It was a little sour because of the lemon, but also sweet which made it a great dessert to try! If you’re feeling adventurous I say try out the Lemon Coconut Cream Pie, if you love the pie you’ll enjoy this ice cream concoction from Sweet Jesus!

Sweet Jesus is doing the Lord’s work right in my books. Head on down for some good ice cream eats and be prepared to fully convert to their way of enjoying ice cream for life.

Glow Juicery in Hamilton, Ontario

Jesse Briscoe has transformed the back portion of her beautiful home into a location for Canadian franchise Glow Juicery, a company who’s goal is to challenge their customers to look at food differently. This mission resonated strongly at the opening of Glow Juicery Hamilton, which is conveniently located out of Jesse’s Kitchen. Jesse’s vision wasn’t only to build a successful business for herself, but to be able to give Hamilton education on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Glow Juicery
35 Pine Street, Hamilton, ON, L8P 2A2, Canada

glow juiceryI had a chance to speak to founder Marnie about why this location was so special to her, and she explained to me that she thinks it’s unique because it is unlike any other location she’s helped launch.

Glow Juicery isn’t what you may think it is, to be honest, a lot of people may think that nothing that tastes this good could possibly be healthy, but it is! It’s not rabbit food; it is soul food that makes you feel energized from the mind and down. Everything from their juices to their salads and delish glow bites is nutritious and jam-packed full of ingredients that can help us power through the day. Glow sees change and is in fact, that change in this plethora of toxic options we are faced with every day that causes harm to our bodies. They deliver juices that detoxify the body, brings energy to the body and clears and restores the mind.

Glow Seasonal Salad

Jesse had many treats available for us to taste test while visiting her “Glow home”, the first that I tried was the Glow Seasonal Salad. This salad is packed with seasonal vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers and chickpeas and plenty of other amazing vegetables.

Nanaimo Bars

I also had a chance to try the raw vegan Nanaimo Bars, and they were absolutely delicious! I don’t think I would be able to tell the difference between a typical Nanaimo bar and the vegan ones I tried at Glow. Super chocolatey, nutty and even more delectable!

Glow bite

The Glow bites are also another favourite of mine. My favourite ingredient in this is the maple syrup, which If you’re Canadian you will appreciate! These little bites of heaven contain cashews, Medjool dates, TriPow, vanilla bean powder, and maple syrup.

There were also plenty of juice to cleanse our palates in between bites of Nanaimo bars and Glow bites. Jesse allowed us to sample the famous juices of Glow Juicery such as After Glow, Ener-G Glow, Vitamin G, and Citrus Glow.

After Glow: Spinach + Cucumber + Celery + Kale + Apple + Parsley

Ener-G Glow: Spinach + Cucumber + Pear + Celery + Chlorophyll

Vitamin G: Cucumber + Carrot + Orange + Lemon + Ginger

Citrus Glow: Orange + Lemon + Ginger + Coconut H20
