Welcome Mi’hito Sushi Laboratory to downtown Toronto! I was given the privilege to attend a media event hosted by DKLO Events to explore this new sushi joint and all their offerings. Mi’hito opened up their first location in Mississauga (right next to Toronto) and were the first to bring the sushi burrito craze to the GTA (Greater Toronto Area)! I have actually dropped by this downtown location during their opening week and had the chance to try a few of their varieties but this event allowed me to try more.

Let’s Get Messy: Tavern’s 4th Annual Low Country Boil

If you keep up with my posts here at GOF, you know that Tavern was one of my old stomping grounds when I lived in Brentwood. Tavern has one of the most beautiful patios in all of LA, but it maintains an easy-going vibe. The Larder at Tavern, their cafe, serves coffee, tea, pastries and grab-and-go items. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or having a dinner date with your significant other, Tavern is one of the most consistent restaurants in LA. Today, I explore a different side to Tavern, a more down home cooking side.

Recently I attended an exclusive media preview for Tavern’s 4th Annual Low Country Boil, which will take place Sunday, June 25th. Chef de Cuisine, Amy Deaderick hosts this boil which the Tavern owners Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne fully endorse. This annual boil is very personal to Deaderick, who grew up in South Carolina. Memories of her childhood and the Carolina culture inspire every course.

Isle of Palms & Boiled Peanuts

For $65 per person, this one-time event will be set in The Larder at Tavern, serving up three courses and dessert. South Carolina-based musicians Josh and Leslie Roberts will be providing live acoustic folk-country tunes to really set a “dining by the shoreline” ambiance. The Communal tables are covered with newspapers and -warning- you may get wet, so come out in your “eatin’ dress”.

Slidebar in Fullerton, CA: Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce And A Cali Bandito Taco Make The Night Complete

In the north end of Orange County lies the beautiful city of Fullerton. While this opinion may be slightly skewed since I’ve lived here for more than half my life, Fullerton really is pretty. This time of year the Jacarandas are in full bloom so Downtown Fullerton looks extra gorgeous with all the purple trees against the old historic buildings. Slidebar is one of those buildings and is filled with musical history from OC. Memorabilia from tons of huge rock bands pepper the walls and give the place a cool vibe.

LA Food Fest 2017 Preview: Familiar Faces And New Friends Representing The Best Of The LA Scene

We were given a glimpse at all the goodies that are in store for the LA Food Fest, June 10th, 2017, 2 – 7 PM at LA Memorial Coliseum, 3911 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90037.

Get out those #stretchypants! The LA Food Fest always features award-winning chefs and restaurants, plenty of food stands, food trucks and carts, a beer garden, cocktail bars, coffee, desserts… basically everything under the sun!

For the $65 general admission ticket, LA Food Fest offers 100+ food and beverage vendors. For the $95 VIP ticket, attendees are given early entry and access to the VIP Lounge.

We were at LA Food Fest last year and this year, we’re even more excited because many foodie businesses we’ve featured on GOF in the past are going to be there serving up bites. It’s always good to see your friends! There will also be some new faces, and we’re excited to see them as well.

Postpartum Weight Loss: The Struggle Is Real

Postpartum weight loss is no joke. Let me just get that statement out of the way.

During my pregnancy, I convinced myself that I was going to eat organic, garden fresh vegetables and follow a very strict eating regime that would fuel my body full of nutrition and not hop on the unhealthy weight train. (While being pregnant, you should never worry about gaining healthy weight and always follow the advice of your physician, let me just clarify myself.) My visions of strolling through Whole Foods and local farmer’s markets were quickly blurred by the bright lights blinding me in the Super Burrito drive-thru.

Pregnancy is beautifully strange. You crave things you never thought you would eat in a million years. Trust me, I became the fast food junkie of Reno, shamelessly devouring double cheeseburgers and smothered chile relleno burritos at random times throughout the day. There are some things you just cannot control, nor would want to.

Pasta Sisters in Los Angeles Expanding to Culver City This Fall!

The type of businesses I love to feature on Girls on Food is family-owned businesses where the food is so tasty, that they’ve earned an opportunity to expand and are on the brink of something bigger. Pasta Sisters in Los Angeles embodies just that- their dine-in deli and pasta shop is growing into a second, and much larger, location in Culver City this coming Fall.

While I eagerly await their future 90 seat Culver City location to open in the Helms Bakery (it’ll be walking distance from me!) I decided to stop into their main shop on W. Pico Blvd. and try the famous spaghetti dishes I’ve been reading so much about over the past two years.

Their current location, in an unassuming strip mall, is small, but it gets packed! I came in on a weekday around 4 pm, all the tables were full, and there was a line for the to-go food. As I was taking images of the interior, a regular customer of theirs was curious to know what I was photographing. I told her about the write-up, and she let me know that Pasta Sisters supplies their pasta to a nearby school on Fridays for their lunches. This may have been the first time I was impressed with a restaurant for doing good before I tasted just how good the food was.

Chang Sensory Trails and Chef’s Table in San Francisco

Thai food is one of my go-to cuisines when I’m in the mood to eat out; in my house growing up, we would opt to get Thai takeout instead of Chinese food. When I heard about Chang Sensory Trails hosted by Chang Beer, a festival celebrating Thai food and flavors, I was super excited to check it out!

The festival took place at Fort Mason in San Francisco, after having great turnouts in Singapore, London, and Los Angeles. Locally known Thai restaurants had different stalls set up throughout the venue serving some of their signature dishes. All of the meals were inspired by Chef Bo Songvisava and Chef Dylan Jones culinary and life journey, in addition to the special tasting I had the pleasure of experiencing. Chefs Bo and Dylan are the wife and husband team behind Bo.Lan in Bangkok, considered one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2017, so you know this is going to be legit.

Ebisu on Queen is a Toronto offspring of the Kamei Group, whom introduced Japanese cuisine in Vancouver, British Columbia. With five Japanese restaurants opened up in Vancouver, they decided to bring one over to Toronto! They just opened up in October 2016 and I had the opportunity to check it out with some foodie friends recently. The decor is very modern while the dishes are both modern and traditional that is bound to please anyone.

Nikki Takes Taste of Tribeca

It was Saturday afternoon and the skies were grey but the crowd was bright and cheery because Taste of Tribeca was in full effect. With over 60 participating vendors and endless plates of delicious goodness, the streets between Greenwich Street and Hudson Street were lined with what seemed like unlimited small plates of some of the best chef’s creations in New York City.

Grilled Chicken Wing Over Ancient Grains and Ramps by Marc Forgione

Everything from scrumptious Steak Tartare at American Cut, to an entire ice cream cone filled with a cold creamy concoction at The Odeon, to an entire Pulled Pork Sandwich at Walker’s, there was something for everyone and then some. Some of my favorites included Grilled Chicken Wing Over Ancient Grains and Ramps by Marc Forgione, the Mini Bagels Topped With Lox by Zucker’s, and of course a perfectly prepared slice of pizza by Bar Cyrk (well, because this pizza princess can’t go anywhere without indulging in her kryptonite).

Sometimes I think I am a large man who can eat endlessly, but unfortunately that is not the case. Despite me telling my self I could do it, and wanted to do it, I simply could not sample all the tasty treats at the festival. Oh, the struggle.

Isabel’s Pretty in Pink Hummus With Roasted Beets

Beets are the root vegetable that are truly amazing to me. The colors are amazing and they are so versatile! Pickled, as a salad with goat cheese, roasted on their own… I just love them.
This roasted beet hummus takes hummus to a new level of awesome. The subtle beet flavor makes regular hummus not so regular and just look at that color! I also roast the garlic. This gives garlic flavor without having the harshness of raw garlic. Beet hummus is great on toast, as a dip with pea snacks or pretzels, on salad…really you could eat it with a spoon. After the roasting, it takes no time to whip up in your food processor. If you don’t have a food processor, get one. It’ll change your foodie life.
Ingredients
1 medium beet
4 large cloves of garlic
1 can chickpeas (drained)
1 1/2 lemon juice (fresh squeezed)
2 TBSP tahini
Optionals
Sea salt to taste
Pepper to taste
Garlic powder to taste
Cayenne pepper to taste
Olive oil
Directions
Preheat oven to 400F.
Toss beets in a little olive oil and season with a pinch of sea salt.
Roast beets and garlic (leave skin on garlic) for about 15 minutes or until beets are soft.
Add roasted beets and garlic (skin removed) to food processor with chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, spices and a few drizzles of olive oil.
As the processor works it’s mixing magic add more olive oil until it forms into the consistency you like.
Taste and add more seasoning as needed. That’s it! Enjoy!
Tip- To make smoother hummus put chickpeas in a medium bowl and fill up to where chickpeas are covered with about an inch of water. With fingers, mix around/roll and squeeze gently to remove skins from the chickpeas. Don’t squeeze hard enough to break the chickpeas, but just enough where the skin will slide off. You’ll quickly get the hang of it once you do a few. I get really OCD with this but don’t worry about getting every single one off! Voila! Smooth hummus!

San Diego Reader’s Tacotopia 2017

There are very few things in this world that I love more than tacos, to be quite honest, tacos were over half the reason I even moved down to San Diego. That being said, I was probably way too excited to go back to Tacotopia, at Golden Hill Park, this year to help cast my vote for the Most Innovative and Best Traditional Tacos in San Diego. My friend Courtney and I spent our Saturday in Golden Hill Park eating our way through over 50 of San Diego’s best tacos!

It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!

 

This event put on by the San Diego Reader is always extremely well-executed with various beverage companies sampling products, tons of prizes and giveaways, live music, and this time- margaritas!
